What an anagram is
An anagram is a word made by rearranging every letter of another word. Listen becomes silent; triangle becomes integral. Word games use the same idea loosely: you are given a set of letters and asked to build the longest or highest-scoring word you can, even if some letters are left over.
This solver handles both. Choose exact length for a true anagram, or leave it on all words to see every shorter word your letters can build.
How the search works
- The tool counts how many times each letter appears in your input.
- It compares that count with the letter count of every word in a 168,000-word English dictionary.
- A word qualifies only if it never needs more of a letter than you have. Blank tiles (
?) cover a shortfall of up to two letters. - Results are grouped by length and sorted by Scrabble score, then alphabetically.
listen, the exact anagram is silent. Shorter results include tiles, inlet, islet, lens, and nest, each checked against the same letter counts.
Scrabble and Words With Friends scoring
The score shown next to each word is the base tile value with no board multipliers. Letter values follow standard English Scrabble: one point for A, E, I, L, N, O, R, S, T, U; two for D and G; three for B, C, M and P; four for F, H, V, W and Y; five for K; eight for J and X; and ten for Q and Z.
Words With Friends uses a different table — J is 10, for example — so treat these scores as a ranking, not an official tournament total.
Tips for longer words
- Start with suffixes. Look for -ING, -TION, -ED, -ER, and -LY; they consume common letters and often unlock a longer answer.
- Park vowels together. Words like audio, ouija, and queue show how unusual vowel clusters can be.
- Use blanks late. A blank is most valuable when it completes a high-scoring word, not when it patches an early guess.
- Try exact mode first. If a full anagram exists, it is almost always the best play.
Frequently asked questions
What is an anagram?
A word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of another. Listen and silent are anagrams, as are triangle and integral.
How does the solver work?
It matches letter counts between your input and every dictionary word, then filters by length and sorts by score. No network request is made after the dictionary loads.
Why are some results obscure?
The dictionary is a broad English list that includes plurals, older spellings, and words valid in word games. Those entries often score well and are worth knowing.
Can I use blanks?
Yes — type ? for each blank, up to two. Blanks cover any missing letter and score zero, so results that rely on them rank lower.
Does it work offline?
After the dictionary loads once, the search runs entirely in your browser and keeps working if your connection drops.
Note: Word validity varies by game and dictionary. Official Scrabble tournaments use a specific word list that is not public domain, so some words here may be rejected in sanctioned play.
