Letter frequency in the remaining words
Bar length = share of candidates containing that letter. Use it to pick a guess that tests what you don't know yet.
How to use the Wordle helper
- Enter the five letters of the guess you already played.
- Click the bar under each letter to set its color: gray if the letter is absent, yellow if it is in the word but in a different position, green if it is in the right position.
- The list updates with every word that is consistent with all of your clues, ranked by letter coverage.
- Pick the word that tests the most new letters, or the one that looks most likely, and play it.
The solver searches a dictionary of 14,855 five-letter words — the full set of guesses accepted by the game — so every suggestion is a word you can actually play.
How the filtering works
Each clue is a constraint. The tool starts with the whole dictionary and removes words that break any constraint:
- Green fixes a letter at a position, so every word with a different letter there is removed.
- Yellow requires the letter somewhere else in the word, so words without it — or with it in the same position — are removed.
- Gray removes words containing that letter, unless the same letter also has a green or yellow clue elsewhere in the guess.
Repeated letters are the usual place where players get confused. If you guess SPEED and only one E turns yellow, the answer contains exactly one E, not two. The solver accounts for this by excluding gray letters only when they are not confirmed elsewhere.
A simple strategy that works
Your first two guesses should be about information, not luck. Cover the six most common letters — E, A, R, O, T, L — plus common consonants such as S, N, and C. Words like SLATE, CRANE, and TRACE do this well.
After two guesses you usually know enough vowels and consonants to switch from exploring to solving. At that point, filter with this tool and prefer words that fit the pattern over words that merely feel familiar.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Wordle solver work?
It applies your green, yellow, and gray clues as filters over a 14,855-word dictionary, then ranks what remains by how much new information each word would reveal. No answer is stored or revealed.
What is the best starting word?
Any word with distinct, common letters. SLATE, CRANE, TRACE, and RAISE are popular because they cover high-frequency letters and common positions without repeating a letter.
Why does a gray letter sometimes still appear?
Because you may have marked the same letter green or yellow in another position. A gray tile means that occurrence is not in the word, not that the letter never appears.
Does this show the answer?
No. It shows candidates that fit your clues. You still make the guess, which keeps the puzzle a puzzle.
Is this affiliated with Wordle or The New York Times?
No. This is an independent helper. Wordle and The New York Times are trademarks of their respective owners, and this site has no affiliation with either.
Note: The dictionary is a general list of accepted five-letter English words. Wordle's answer list is curated and may exclude obscure entries, so a suggestion here is always a valid guess rather than a guaranteed answer.
